On Tuesday our hall was very busy, as we held our first Sharing Assembly of 2009. Children from all classes proudly shared their achievements.
Hamsters and Hedgehogs have been celebrating the Chinese New Year. Our Nursery is now guarded by a large green dragon!
Afternoon subject this week has been science. Squirrels Class held lessons in a toy shop, and discovered how toys moved. Rabbits kindly shared their wind-up Incy Wincy spiders, who sneakily climbed up and down their water spouts! Rabbits have been learning about the changing states of materials, and discovered that ice cubes melt more quickly next to the radiator, than they do when left out in the cold playground! There was also a tasty toast aroma coming from their classroom on Wednesday, when they learnt about how bread changes when heated! Badgers have been investigating insulators (I wonder if this is why the zebra fur covering Squirrels' big chair has suddenly shrunk in length!)
On Friday, we had a special Assembly about our E.B.L.S "Flat Eaton" (based on the "Flat Stanley" project). We all decorated individual pictures, and took them home, to be sent off around the world. We await their return, along with responses about various topics. A map of the world in the Hall will chart destinations.
Our next event, remember, is History Day, on the thirteenth of February, so don't panic if you spot Egyptians, Kings and Queens, or people and creatures from the seventeenth century, in the village!

This week, on Tuesday afternoon, we welcomed a string quartet to School. They played a variety of tunes and talked to us about their instruments.
Our topic in the afternoons this week has been Religious Education. Hedgehogs and Squirrels thought about the "Seven Wonders of the World". They invented an "Eighth Wonder of the World." (There was even a pyramid made of chocolate!) Rabbits investigated celebrations and special times, and learnt all about Shabbat - the Jewish Sabbath celebrations. Badgers concentrated on places of worship for different religions. They made 3D models, with intricate details and labels.
Our flower borders around the School are looking very interesting, with splashes of colour from primroses and pansies. The children are looking forward to seeing our gladioli, daffodil and tulip bulbs flowering in the Spring.
KS2 children enjoyed a multi skills session on Monday afternoon.
Our next special interest will be History Day on the 13th February, when all Staff and children will dress in costumes that echo the topics being studied. Hamsters and Hedgehogs: Kings and Queens; Squirrels and Rabbits: The Great Fire of London; Badgers: Egyptians.

Happy New Year!

We had a wonderfully exciting start to our new term, with a visit to Milton Keynes Theatre, to see the pantomime, "Peter Pan". Staff and children enjoyed a picnic in the hall, before boarding the coach.
On Thursday there was a disco and tea, in the School hall. there was a bubble machine and lots of prizes, gifts and medals. Only the grown-ups had trouble with their ears!
Our foundation subject this week has been design and technology. Hedgehogs and Squirrels have made puppets. The children designed their own puppets, using wooden spoons, paper plates, socks and a variety of decorations. Rabbits have designed and made wind-up toys. Badgers have dyed fabric to make money containers.
Our new range of Choices, for this term are: music; Spanish; needlecraft; mind puzzles; theatre set design, photography.
Inside, we now have a refurbished staff room and office - even the pot plants, blinds and filing cabinets are colour co-ordinated! (Red, of course.)
Outside, our allotment area is complete, and awaits planting in a few weeks. Next step is to refurbish the shed into "E.B.L.S. Potting Shed!

On Monday and Tuesday, we held our "Mary's Knitting" Concert in the Hall. The children from the Nursery joined in with a rendition of "A Gift For The Baby Boy". Now that our Choir's performance and Concert are over, we are beginning to think of what we will do next year, to be a little bit different!
Also, thinking of next year, preparations are well under way for the planning of an allotment that the children will care for. The structure has been built, and plans have been made for the water butts. So far, the children want to grow marrows, pumpkins, potatoes and herbs! So look out you allotment holders, as we intend our veg will be outstanding - like the rest of our School!
Next week, we are having our School parties on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday, we will have our Christmas lunch, served by Staff. Thursday is the day for our "Talent Show" and children are practicing their routines. On the last day of term, we are holding a "DVD Extravaganza". After all that, we will all be ready for our holiday.
All that remains for this year is to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all at Eaton Bray Lower School.

Our School looks extremely festive and bright, festoned with fairy lights, foil and fun!
On Tuesday and Thursday evenings, our "Eaton Bray Lower School Simply Red Choir", sang their hearts out with great gusto. The Choir looked wonderful in their red and white choral outfits, (School colours, of course) made by one of our teaching assistants. Renditions ranged from traditional carols to a touch of jazz. Their props ranged from reindeer antlers to frosty snowmen, to saxaphones. A strong favourite seemed to be, "Shop Till You Drop", when the actions caused lots of laughter from the audience. Many parents commented on how lovely it was to have our own School Choir, unusual in a Lower School. Guests enjoyed jacket potatoes with scrumptious fillings and the hot dogs went down well with the children!
On Monday and Tuesday next week we hold our Concert staged by the younger children. Hopefully this will be enjoyed by all - we are awaiting the reaction to a wonderful set of animals - magical or what?!! Guests will be treated to mince pies and hot drinks.
This week has given us the opportunity for making calendars, cards and gifts, as our foundation topic for the afternoons has been design technology. Hopefully parents will love the gifts!

Our School is beginning to look very festive. "Peter Pan" welcomes visitors at the main entrance, whilst "Tinkerbell" and her fairy friends are fluttering further along the entrance corridor. The main corridor has a range of boards portraying scenes from the fairy tale, ranging from a ferocious crocodile to night
time scenes of moonbeams and magic!
As well as decorating the School main areas, we have worked hard on geography this week, using maps and globes to trace journeys for Barnaby Bear. Badgers have studied detailed maps on
local routes, and worked out their own keys for specific features.
The next couple of weeks are going to be extremely busy, but hopefully great fun for us all! Key Stage Two children will perform as "EBLS Simply Red Choir" on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from six o'clock until s
even o'clock. Food will be available at the interval. The following week, on the 8th and 9th, Key Stage One children will perform their Concert called "Mary's Knitting". It is a singing/dancing and acting bonanza, including a flock of sheep who provide the blanket that Mary is knitting for Baby Jesus.
On Saturday, we hold our "Christmas Fair", in the School, from twelve o'clock until two thirty. father Christmas is our very special visitor. Do come along if you feel like fun, food and festive feelings!
