Week Ending 16th November 2018

It's been a much quieter week this week at EBA than last, but with Christmas rapidly approaching... could this just be the lull before the storm?

Our Year Four children in Badgers Class have been enjoying weekly visits on a Monday morning from Metro Bank, who offer a "Money Zone" education programme for Key Stage Two children.  They will receive three visits in school from a bank representative, who comes in to speak to them about money and savings, then on the fourth week, the children will visit the bank to find out what goes on there, and will have the opportunity to step inside the vault!  How exciting for them!

The children have been busy in the classrooms, with plenty of different projects underway across the school.  In their Science lessons, Squirrels children have been looking at changing shapes.  They were given a variety of objects, and had to experiment to see if they could bend, straighten, squash or otherwise manipulate the shape of each item.  Some they discovered they could not change in anyway, for example an iron nail!

Otters Class children have been enjoying Maths activities this week, exploring whole and part numbers.  They have also done some food tasting in Design Technology, and a history treasure hunt around the classroom, matching sources to information.

As part of the Schools Linking Network programme, Rabbits Class are linking schools with Maidenhall Primary School in Luton.  This week they Skyped their counterpart Year Three class, which is called Polar Bears Class.  The children all brought along an object which they felt reflected the meaning of EBA, and the children at Maidenhall then shared their favourite toys and books with Rabbits.  The children are all looking forward to meeting and working with them during this academic year.

On Thursday, a group of Year Three and Year Four children took part in a Tag Rugby tournament at Thomas Whitehead School in Houghton Regis.  With the usual joy, competitiveness and sense of fair play that EBA children bring to all sports tournaments, the children played with bravery and skill against three teams from the home side.  They made it through to the final, then narrowly lost by a single try (7-6), showing great sportsmanship throughout.

Well done to all those involved.

Hedgehogs had a wonderful day on Thursday.  Their topic for this term is Superheroes, and they have been learning about an historic superhero - Robin Hood!  So on Thursday they had a "Robin Hood Day", which was spent entirely outside in the (Sherwood) Forest School area.  The children did their literacy work outside and, as Robin Hood's Band of Merry Men, enjoyed all sorts of outdoor activities including archery and hot chocolate drinking.  What a lovely way to learn!

On Friday, Years Five and Six were visited by Greg Baker, a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) specialist, who will be coming in throughout the year to work on various projects with the children.  This week they were challenged to create a "toy" using a wind up mechanism to simulate a clockwork toy - this involved cotton reels and elastic bands and some ingenuity!
