Week Ending 22nd March 2019

The Year Six children really had a marvellous time in France last weekend.  They packed so much into their four days away, including a trip to the market, crepe making, archery, fencing, a visit to the beach, a tour of the town of Rouen, and a trip to the World War I battlefields where they laid a wreath to commemorate the fallen.

The staff that accompanied the children were full of praise for their behaviour and positive attitude and Mrs Gray was happy to be able to tell the parents, "Your children have been delightful company - thoughtful, polite and willing to give everything a try. We have been complimented almost everywhere for their behaviour which is just lovely."

Back at school, this week this week Rabbits completed their Big Friendly Giant.  He can be seen in the corridor outside the classroom - please come and have a look.  They are continuing to read the story in class reading sessions.

Squirrels Class have enjoyed a trip to Luton Town Football Club, with half of the class going on Tuesday morning and the other half on Friday morning.

On Thursday, Foxes Class children made appetizers during their EBA Enterprise sessions, using and developing their new found pastry skills!

On Friday the children all enjoyed their Choices and Enrichment sessions.  The groups that have been making bird boxes finished their projects today, so our feathered friends can look forward to their new homes soon!  There was great excitement for the "World of Work" group this week, as they had a visitor from Appledown Kennels - two visitors in fact, one of which had four legs and a waggy tail!

With Easter just around the corner, the PTA have organised an Easter Egg Hunt around Eaton Bray and Edlesborough, Participants have to solve a series of clues which will take them to various locations, and once they have worked out the final puzzle they will win a chocolate egg!  Next term, the PTA will also be hosting a "Spring Fizz" evening for adults, which we hope will be as successful and enjoyable an event as the Wine and Cheese evening held before Christmas.

Week Ending 15th March 2019

Monday saw the grand final of the EBA Bake Off.  The seven class winners got busy baking over the weekend and brought in their fantastic showstoppers on Monday morning for the lucky judges to taste and admire.  Well done to all the finalists: Tilly, Phoebe, Teagan, Diaan, Brooke, Edith and Evalyn; but special congratulations to Teagan, who was crowned 2019 EBA Bake Off winner for her fabulous Ladybird cake, which tasted just as good as it looked!

On Monday afternoon, it was the turn of the Year Five team to take part in a Tag Rugby tournament at Dunstable Rugby Club.  Our Year Five boys and girls put in a great performance, winning all of the three games played.  All the skills the children had practiced were clear to see - great running and footwork, passing, keeping onside, supporting and tagging.  The children played with the usual teamwork, great spirit and enthusiasm.

No placings were given for this tournament or last week's, but the certificates for excellence were certainly well earned.

Rabbits Class began their music sessions with Coco the singing teacher from Inspiring Music on Wednesday - Coco has been working with Hedgehogs and Otters classes over the last few weeks.  The children sang lots of different songs, changing their pitch, and Coco also demonstrated some musical instruments.  It was great fun and Rabbits are looking forward to the session next week.

On Wednesday, Otters Class were once again visited by Explore Learning, who came in to deliver two workshops, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. In "Musical Adventures", the children listened to different types of music and were encouraged to write about and draw whatever the music inspired in them, and in "Fruit Shop" the children used fruit to explore some Maths problems.  Thank you to the team at Explore Learning for offering these free workshops to schools.

On Thursday morning it was Squirrels Class assembly.  Parents were invited in to hear the children speak about all that they have been learning about this term, which has been based around the theme "My Wonderful World".  This has included finding out about local history, and the children talked about the straw plaiting and hat making industries.  They also reported on their trip to Tring Museum, demonstrated their work on 3D shapes and on algorithms, and finished off with a lovely dance routine!  Every child in the class had a part to play, and all spoke up beautifully in front of their audience.

Thursday is EBA Enterprise day for Foxes Class, and their current project is pastry making.  Last week they made jam tarts using shortcrust pastry, and very tasty they were too!  This week, it was choux pastry, and their challenge was to make profiteroles.  Their first attempt was not a great success, though a new dish was created and nicknamed the "proflaterole"(!) but with a bit of tweaking to the recipe, the next batch was just perfect!

On Friday morning, a group of eight very excited Year Six children arrived very early at school, ready to board a coach en route to France!  The children, plus Mrs Gray, Mrs Barker and Mrs Young, will be staying at the Chateau de Chatereine in Normandy, and are looking forward to a packed weekend of sight-seeing, activities and French speaking, returning on Monday evening.  We hope they all have a fabulous time, and look forward to hearing all about their adventures next week!

Week Ending 8th March 2019

What a very busy week we have had!

On Monday it was the final round of the EBA Bake Off, with some lovely cake offerings from Hedgehogs Class.  Next week it is the grand final!

On Wednesday, we celebrated World Book Day.  Our theme for this year was non-fiction, and we requested that the children dress up as someone that inspires them.  As usual, everyone put in a lot of effort (thank you Mums and Dads!) and we had some wonderful costumes!

On Wednesday afternoon, a team of Year Six children attended a tag rugby tournament at Dunstable Rugby Club.  They showed an excellent display of the teamwork and skills learnt during their PE lessons, and were unfazed by the awful wind and rain - such a contrast to last week's glorious weather!  They played four matches against teams from other local schools, and with three wins and one draw, acquitted themselves magnificently, doing our school proud.

Through the Schools Linking Network, Rabbits Class are proud to be linked to the Year Three class at Maidenhall Primary School in Luton.  On Thursday they met up at Stockwood Park Discovery Centre and a fun day was had by all! 

The children took part in activities and games designed to get them mixing and talking to their new friends.  One activity was a scavenger hunt around the museum, which involved lots of searching and investigation.  Then they went on to design and make a life size carriage which they could actually sit in, using a construction kit.  They had great fun joining the components together and testing its strength. 

The children also found time to look in the gallery at the art exhibition, before spending some time playing in the outdoor playground with their new friends.  We look forward to Maidenhall Primary School coming to visit us after Easter.

This week, as part of their work on the local area, Otters Class have visited Luton Town Football Club, to find out more about "The Hatters".  Half of the class went on Wednesday (in their World Book Day costumes) and the rest on Friday.  They enjoyed a tour of the grounds, learnt all about the history of the club and met "Happy Harry", the club mascot!

On Friday, Deer Class had a Young Enterprise Day.  They were visited by three business experts who ran a day of workshops and activities, sharing with the children their knowledge and experience, and giving them advice about how to set up and run a business.  They had an enjoyable and interesting day, and will use all that they have learnt when planning their future enterprise projects.
