Week Ending 17th June 2016

This week has been "Healthy Eating Week" and the children have been finding out all about the benefits of eating a balanced diet and keeping fit and healthy.

Badgers Class enjoyed making tasty fruit kebabs, which were very refreshing on a warm summer's day!  Deer Class incorporated healthy eating into their maths lessons, by looking at food labels, and calculating the calorie and other nutritional content of an average meal.  Using this information, they will be able to make healthy eating choices when out shopping or creating a menu.  They also designed healthy eating posters which are on display in the school.

Meanwhile, our Breakfast Club children know how important it is to start every day with a good breakfast...!

Our British Value for this half term is "Respect" and on Monday, Badgers Class presented an assembly to the rest of the school on this theme.  The children all thought about what respect means to them, and considered the reasons they should have respect for other people.

On Monday afternoon, Badgers and Foxes Class enjoyed shot put in their PE lesson on the field, with Mr Killick, a visiting sports coach who is also one of our parents.  Many thanks to him for a fun session.

Year 6 children are very excited to have started their new "Dragons' Den" Club.  Building on the skills they have learnt during EBA Enterprise, they have designed and made goods to sell, and have written up some information about their project.

On Thursday, we had another visitor in school when Mr Mayne, Eaton Bray's local historian, came in to talk to a group of enthusiastic young historians.  He told them all about the history of Eaton Bray Castle, and they were interested to learn that many of the buildings in the village still contain tiny pieces of flint from the original castle.  Information about the castle will be displayed next term in our new EBA Museum.

Mr Mayne then held a questions and answer session about a variety of local history topics, and gave anyone living in the village the opportunity to find out more about the history of their house, or details of what was on the site before the property was built.  Hopefully we will be able to arrange another event before the end of term using this information.  Watch this space!

If you would like to find out more about the history of your property and you live in the village, please pass your details (name and full address) to Miss Waldock.

Friday was a fun and exciting day, because this was a special day of celebration for the Queen's 90th birthday!  Everyone dressed in patriotic red, white and blue, or wore their Cub/Brownie/Beavers uniform, and the hall was decked out in bunting and streamers for the occasion.  We had a special buffet lunch, which the children enjoyed street party style, with sandwiches, sausages, crisps and cake (even during Healthy Eating Week we are all allowed some tasty treats when it's the Queen's birthday!)

In the afternoon everyone, from Pre-School children to Year 6, had a fantastic time, being entertained by Magic Dave, who came in with magic tricks, puppets and jokes that had both children and adults roaring with laughter.  There was lots of audience participation, with volunteers taking part in some of the tricks and comedy routines - and a particularly funny moment for the children was when Mrs Matthews and Mrs Clark were selected to take part alongside some of their pupils!

The lovely day was rounded off by "Ice Cream Friday" when ice creams and lollies are available to buy in the school playground after school, thanks to our super HSA ladies.

Please enjoy some photos from our special celebration day.

Week Ending 10th June 2016

A week of hot sunshine and heavy thunderstorms!  Fortunately we managed to dodge the worst of the rainfall, and avoided the flooding that hit some other schools in nearby Dunstable.

On Tuesday, a team of Year 3 and 4 cricketers went to All Saints Academy to take part in a tournament with other local schools.  They played fantastically well, scoring plenty of runs and coming away the overall tournament winners.  On Thursday, it was the turn of our year 5 and 6 cricketers, who were equally successful, hitting lots of fours and sixes, and again, coming top of the leaderboard.  The children were all presented with well deserved gold medals, which they proudly wore back to school.  Well done teams - what talented sportsmen and women we have at EBA!

The sunshine and showers have provided great conditions for growing, and our young gardeners in Hamsters Class have been rewarded with beautiful blooms upon their return to Pre-School after the half term holiday.  It was back in April that they planted sweet peas in tyres and petunias in wellington boots, and these are now providing a wonderful colourful display for everyone to enjoy.

Otters Class have been busy growing things as well.  They have been looking at how their sunflowers have grown, and recorded their findings in their sunflower diaries.  They have also been investigating tomato plants, and each table has planted their own tomato plant in a grow bag, to join the other plants in their plot.  They could choose another vegetable to grow; the most popular choice was a cucumber!

Hedgehogs Class are growing things too - something a bit different.  They have caterpillars, which they are feeding and nurturing, and are looking forward to seeing them develop into butterflies.  They went out on a bug hunt around the school grounds on Tuesday, and found spiders, slugs, snails, ladybirds, and a variety of insect eggs, that were all very interesting.

Friday was a non-uniform day, and everyone was asked to bring in a donation of sweets or craft materials for the Family Fun Day, which takes place on Sunday 26th June.  What a lovely lot of goodies we received - thank you to all the parents and children who generously donated.  The Fun Day looks like it will be a fabulous day for everyone, with plenty of activities, games and competitions all included in the ticket price... plus lots of sweets as well!

Week Ending 27th May 2016

Early on Monday morning, eighteen excited Year 5 children boarded two minibuses, heading down to Devon for a fun packed week at Beam House PGL Centre, near Bideford.

They have enjoyed a fantastic week, with glorious sunshine, and taken part in all sorts of adventurous activities, including body boarding, street surfing, high ropes, aeroball and much more.

Once again, we have been able to follow their adventures via Twitter, and parents have been able to see photos of their children's happy faces - and assess just how much laundry they will need to do on their child's return...

As you can see, they have had a wonderful time, and we are very proud of them for their good behaviour and great attitude throughout the week.  Everyone got fully involved in all the activities, and really got the most out of their experience.  Well done Foxes, you are a credit to the school!

Back at EBA, the children have enjoyed a relaxing week, with plenty of art, craft and music on the timetable.  The School Choir are busy rehearsing their harmonies in preparation for the Edlesborough Music Festival in June, and the ukulele group is perfecting their song in readiness for a performance at the HSA Fun Day.

Squirrels Class enjoyed a post SATs picnic on Monday, feasting on chocolate cupcakes and having fun in the park.  They have also been very creative and made paper carnations as a follow up to their local history work last week.

There has been a Grecian theme to much of the artwork done in school this week, which is linked to our Olympic topic for this term, as the children find out more about the Ancient Greek Olympics.  Rabbits Class have made and decorated Greek pottery, while children in Badgers, Foxes and Deer Classes have been painting art work for our Carnival float, which will have a mythical theme this year...

Children in Deer Class meanwhile, are exploring another aspect of Ancient Greek culture, and are engaging in philosophical debates, which they are thoroughly enjoying.  The hot topic of discussion this week has been whether twelve year olds should be allowed mobile phones.  As you can imagine, the children have plenty of opinions on this matter!

Our library has been having something of a refurbishment this week, with new bookcases, tables and chairs, and lots and lots of lovely new books, paid for by donations from parents following our Readathon last week.  We are looking forward to creating a fabulous space in which to continue our "Reading Revolution!"

Have a lovely half term!  We are back on Monday 6th June.
