Week Ending 8th May 2015

A shorter week than usual, with the Bank Holiday Monday allowing us all a well-deserved long weekend... but as usual, we packed a lot into our four day week!

Hedgehogs and Hamsters had a treat when Josie the tortoise visited.  She is just 4.5cm long and likes to eat dandelions!

Otters Class have been learning about birds this week.  They have done some research on the computer, and made bird masks.  They also went out birdwatching in and around the School grounds.

Badgers have been continuing their work on Salvador Dali, and are in the process of making their own "melting clocks."

Thursday was General Election day, and in the spirit of democracy, Eaton Bray Academy held its own election - for pupil of the year in Key Stage One and Key Stage Two.  Everyone had a vote, and ballot slips were created with photos of the nominees.  We all lined up in the library to put our X in the box - in secret of course!  The results will be announced in due course...

A very special day to end to the week on Friday - a celebration of the 70th Anniversary of V.E Day.  The School was decked with bright bunting and flags, and everyone dressed up in costumes from that era - children and staff made a real effort and looked amazing!

Many activities were organised for the children, including a visit from a local historian who was able to give them a true insight into what life was like for a child during World War II.  He talked about rationing, the blackout and the constant threat of air raids.  The children were told that everyone had to carry their gas masks with them at all times, and had to learn to identify every aircraft, so that they would know whether what was flying overhead was a friend or enemy! The children were very interested and asked lots of questions, and this in turn prompted discussions about what their own Grandparents and Great Grandparents had done in the war.

In all rooms there were activities for the children.  Rabbits Class designed and made patriotic bunting, and Squirrels made food for a street party feast!  There was much singing of songs from the era, and in the afternoon, a celebration bonfire was lit on the field, while the children enjoyed party games and food.  We really did party like it was 1945!

Week Ending 1st May 2015

Now it's the month of May, and the end of another busy week of School life!

Signs of new life are all around, with many trees in bud and flower.  The allotments have been planted up with a variety of fruit and vegetables, which the EBA Enterprise team will be selling as part of their "sowing and growing" project, and Otters Class have been planting potatoes to find out more about how things grow.

We have all been enjoying lots of outdoor work this week.  Hedgehogs Class went on a nature walk, through Forest School, stopping off in our "Outside Classroom" where the willow is now beginning to bloom, and then out of the School grounds and along the lanes and footpaths around the village.  They saw a variety of spring flowers, wildlife and farm animals.

Rabbits Class went a little further afield, and spent an afternoon in Ashridge Forest, where they put to use some of the outdoor skills they have learnt in Forest School this term, to create structures and sculptures from the natural resources around them.  They played games, enjoyed a drink and a biscuit picnic style, and were lucky enough the spot a wild deer enjoying the Spring sunshine!

On Wednesday the whole of Key Stage Two went on a very interesting trip to the Hindu Temple in Luton, as part of their work for the RE Curriculum.  They were able to observe a service, with lots of bell ringing and singing in Hindi, and afterwards had the opportunity to ask lots of questions.  They enjoyed looking at the beautiful deities which had come all the way from India.

There was excitement for our older children this week, as a parcel arrived from their penfriends in Lesotho.  This was full of letters from the children, and a DVD with a video of the children in their school.  Accompanying the letters was some interesting information about how the children in Lesotho learn in English from their very first day at school, rather than in their own language which is Sesotho.  They are delighted to have the opportunity to practice their English by writing to Eaton Bray children, and we are very impressed by how well they write in a language that is not their own.

Our children are full of ideas about how we can build on this relationship, and strengthen the links between our school and theirs.  It really is a lovely project that fills the children with enthusiasm.

Week Ending 24th April 2015

Another busy week has flown by.  The sun has continued to shine for us, and Otters Class have planted sunflowers and started sunflower diaries.  It will be exciting to see how tall they grow!

Badgers Class have been learning about abstract art, and the surrealist work of Salvador Dali.  They have recreated their own versions of his art with impressive results.

On Thursday we celebrated St George's Day with a special "Full English" Breakfast, for adults and children.  The School Hall was festooned with St George's flags and bunting, and children were invited to come to school wearing their Cubs/Brownies/Beavers uniforms.  The aroma of bacon wafted along the corridors, and guests leaving remarked that they were so full up, that they probably wouldn't require lunch!  Thank you to the HSA for organising the event, and to the kitchen staff for getting up early to cook for us!

Our St George's Day celebrations continued into the afternoon, with cricket on the field, and "Afternoon Tea" with Victoria sponge and fresh orange under the Chatterbox.

A new range of "Choices" began again on Friday, and will run until the May half term holiday.  The selection is as follows: Karate, Jobs People Do, Sports, Raspberry Pi for Key Stage Two, Art, Levers, Bags of Fun, Pottery, Sewing, Orienteering and Golf at Tilsworth Golf Club.

Week Ending 17th April 2015

Summer term has started!  A new topic for EBA - "Walk on the Wild Side."  Our rooms and coridors will portray work linked to this theme, so hopefully it will be amazing just how "wild" things become!

The children have had lots of fun in the sun this week - swimming for Rabbits Class on Tuesday, cricket on Thursday, and Forest School for Key Stage Two children.

Hamsters children have enjoyed tending their vegetable garden, and have had a splashing time with water play!

Apart from all that, it has been quieter than usual in School this week, as most of our Year 5 and 6 children have been enjoying a fabulous break in Devon.

Eighteen children, plus Miss Raymond, Miss Turner, Mr Wise and Mr Potton set off early on Monday morning, and arrived at their destination, Beam House PGL Centre, near Westward Ho! mid afternoon.  At this point Mr Wise and Mr Potton got back in the minibus and drove home again, leaving the rest of the party to enjoy a week of all sorts of exciting activities.
The children have experienced surfing, rifle shooting, fencing, trapeze and zip wire, climbing, abseiling, and much more.  They have kept us up to date with their adventures through Twitter, and the photos and updates we've received have made us all feel quite envious of the fantastic time they have had.  Please enjoy a slideshow of some of the things they have been up to...

The group were so fortunate with the lovely weather we have had this week.  Mr Wise and Mr Potton returned on Friday to collect them and bring them home, and just as they were leaving... it began to rain!
