Week Ending 1st December 2017

Christmas has most definitely now arrived at Eaton Bray Academy!

On Wednesday the children entertained visitors from the "Wednesday Club", the local Age Concern group, who look forward immensely to their annual Christmas visit to us.  The younger children sangs some of the songs that they have been learning for their Christmas Concert, and Year Fours recited some of their "Festive Firework" poetry.  Our friends were then given a tour of the school, and enjoyed tea, coffee and mince pies!  It was a lovely morning, enjoyed by all.

Children in Deer Class also enjoyed a pre-Christmas treat on Wednesday - lunch at Heirlook Cafe!  They walked down to Edlesborough, and were warmly welcomed at the cafe by Scott, the owner, who provided delicious food, and answered the children's many questions about running a cafe.  The children enjoyed sausage sandwiches, bacon sandwiches or cheese on toast, followed by a cookie or chocolate brownie for dessert.  They were also given a short lesson in how to be a barista and make a perfect cup of coffee with a pattern on the top!

Following the visit, the children all wrote letters to Scott expressing their appreciation for the time and attention he gave to them, and were very enthusiastic about how much they enjoyed the wonderful food!  Thank you to Scott and the team at Heirloom, and thank you also to the HSA who funded this special treat.

Thursday saw EBA children taking part in another sports tournament.  All Saints Academy was the venue this time, and they hosted a fantastic indoor athletics event with over 180 children from eleven local schools.  Year Three and Year Four children from our school competed wonderfully against some larger schools, and managed to come fifth overall.

Obstacles courses and field events such as javelin and long jump really tested fitness and strength.  It was a really busy, competitive afternoon, which all involved thoroughly enjoyed.

This week, we have had a Scholastic Book Fair at school, with lots of excellent books available to buy at half price.  We have been delighted by how many children have come along to browse and buy - there certainly are some enthusiastic readers at EBA! And as School earns a commission for every item sold, we are pleased that we will have some extra money to spend on new books for our library.

The Book Fair will be here until the middle of next week, so there is still plenty of time to grab a literary bargain if you haven't yet had a chance to visit!

Preparations have been under way all week for the Christmas Fair on Friday after school.  The HSA ladies have done a marvellous job of decorating the school, and turning it into a real Winter Wonderland!  Santa's igloo has been built, and a workshop provided for his elves.  There are lots of lovely stalls, with games to play, gifts to buy, and prizes to be won, including a real Christmas tree to be won in a silent auction, and some fabulous raffle prizes...

Huge thanks are due to everyone who has worked so hard to organise this event, in particular our parent volunteers Mrs Fisher and Mrs Berresford, who have spent more time at school this week than many of the children and staff, building the igloo and creating the wonderful displays.  Thank you too, to all the local businesses and individuals who have donated raffle prizes (see below for a list of sponsors), or paid to have a stall at the fair. And of course, thank you to all the parents who have donated sweets, bottles and cakes, and who always come along and support these school events.
