Week Ending 5th July 2019

Phew, what a very busy week we have had at Eaton Bray Academy!

Year Six children had an exciting start to the week as they spent Monday and Tuesday visiting the secondary schools that they will be moving to next year.  They came back full of tales about all that they experienced on their taster days, and how much they are looking forward to the opportunities that secondary school will present.

On Wednesday, Hedgehogs Class had a lovely day out at Ashridge Forest.  The children enjoyed exploring the woodland and making dens, then had a picnic in the meadow, where they were joined by their parents, grandparents and other family and friends.  The weather was perfect, and it was a really super day out.

On Wednesday afternoon a representative from Dunstable Library came into school to talk to the children about Space Chase this year's summer reading challenge.  Every time your child reads a book from the library over the summer holiday, they will receive a sticker, and there are rewards for how many stickers they earn.  Dunstable Library has recently relocated to a wonderful new building, so if you haven't already done so why not make a visit this summer and sign your child up for the reading challenge!

Thursday was a fabulous day for Rabbits and Badgers Class.  As part of their "Chocolate" topic, which is linked to their work on the Mayans, the children visited Cadbury World in Birmingham - it was an early start for children (and parents) as the coach left school at 8.00am in order to get there in good time.

The children learned about the history of chocolate production from the early stages in the Mayan Civilization, when chili was added to chocolate as a flavour, to modern  methods.   They learnt this information from first hand experience by travelling back in time and "walking through the recreated centuries".

Next, they discovered the history of Cadbury's Chocolate by listening to the Cadbury story from "Mr Cadbury" himself and his sons.  The children then learned about the process of making chocolate as they were magically transformed into a coco bean (via a simulator) and experienced the process of production from the point of view of the coco bean.  After being shaken, heated and washed (whilst pretending to be a coco bean), Badgers and Rabbits watched some chocolate being made before creating their own chocolate designs.

The children ate a mini fresh chocolate desert each before embarking upon a 4D film adventure with the Cadbury characters and a car ride into a magical Cadbury world.  Finally they played on the exciting Cadbury Adventure World Playground before setting off for home, laden with all sorts of tasty goodies from the gift shop!

What a wonderful day!

Back in school, Thursday was also the day of our Nursery Induction, when the children who will be starting in Hamsters in September come to visit with their parents.  It was lovely to see lots of new faces, and see how much they enjoyed playing in the sunshine in our lovely play area.  We look forward to welcoming the new children to our school family in September.

In the afternoon on Thursday, Squirrels Class were visited by a lady from Hazard Alley Safety Centre in Milton Keynes, who came to talk to the children about Internet Safety.  The children watched a cartoon, which followed two children who are playing a game online, where they interact with different animal characters.  The video taught them the importance of keeping personal information private, of being kind and courteous online, and how to get help if they are ever worried about anything they experience on the internet.  They followed this up with some crafts and games based on the story.

Thursday was also the day of Foxes' Market, an event that the children have been working towards all this term.  The day was spent preparing and cooking food, pricing and labeling their goods, and finally setting up their stall in the playground for business.  On sale was a huge range of cakes, including rocky road, carrot cake, chocolate brownies, cinnamon rolls, as well as rhubarb crumble and custard, fresh produce and plants.

By 3.30pm, the stall was very busy with generous parents buying all the lovely homemade goodies, and the takings amounted to almost £150!  This money will be reinvested by the children to finance their next EBA Enterprise venture, and we would like to thank everyone who kindly supported this event.

On Friday morning, Hedgehogs and Hamsters children were treated to an enjoyable PE session with a visitor from Superstar Sports.  Once again, the weather was lovely, just right for Early Years fun and sports on the field.

This Saturday it's the village carnival once again.  A small team of very talented and creative parents have been working incredibly hard to create a school float that we can be very proud of, based on the history of Eaton Bray.  They have cleverly managed to recreate the village Eaton Bray in miniature, featuring some very familiar buildings made out of just cardboard and tape...

We can't wait to see how wonderful the float will look when it is all dressed and ready to go!
